August 13th is celebrated as the International Left Hander'sDay. It is celebrated to create awareness about the inconveniences faced byleft-handers in a predominantly right-handed world. It celebrates theiruniqueness and differences, who are from seven to ten percent of the world'spopulation. Thousands of left-handed people in today's society have to adapt touse right handed tools and objects.

On 13th August 1992 the Club launched InternationalLeft-Handers Day, an annual event when left-handers everywhere can celebratetheir sinistrality and increase public awareness of the advantages anddisadvantages of being left-handed. This event is now celebrated worldwide, andin the U.K. alone there have been more than 20 regional events to mark the dayin recent years – including left-v-right sports matches, a left-handed teaparty, pubs using left-handed corkscrews where patrons drank and played pub gameswith the left hand only, and nationwide “Lefty Zones” where left-handerscreativity, adaptability and sporting prowess were celebrated, whilstright-handers were encouraged to try out everyday left-handed objects to seejust how awkward it can feel using the wrong equipment!

These events have contributed more than anything else to thegeneral awareness of the difficulties and frustrations left-handers experiencein everyday life, and have successfully led to improved product design andgreater consideration of our needs by the right-handed majority – althoughthere is still a long way to go!!

Happy Left Hander's Day
