The World Population Day isobserved every 11th July to create awareness among  people about of global population issues . Theevent was established by the Governing Council of the United NationsDevelopment Programme in 1989.The world population day states the importance inthe issue of family planning, gender equality, poverty, maternal health andhuman rights.

This year's theme for worldpopulation day is 'Investing in teenage girls'. Teenage girls around the worldface enormous challenges. Many are considered by their communities or parentsto be ready for marriage and motherhood. Many are forced from school, damagingtheir future prospects. Even among girls who stay in school, access to basicinformation about their health, human rights and reproductive rights can behard to come by, leaving them vulnerable to illness, injury and exploitation. These challenges are exacerbated among marginalized girls, such as members ofethnic minorities or those living in poverty or remote areas.

Yet when teenage girls areempowered, when they know about their rights and are given the tools tosucceed, they become agents of positive change in their communities.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moondelivered a message that "On this World Population Day, I urge allGovernments, businesses and civil society to support and invest in teenagegirls. Everyone deserves the benefits of economic growth and social progress.Let us work together to ensure a life of security, dignity and opportunity forall."
