Dr. Huizer was the first author of the first Request For Comments to document not only the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) standards process but also the procedures of its Working Groups. He led the Internet Architecture Board (IAB)’s landmark pronouncement on the use of cryptography in Internet protocols. He also led the IETF’s POISED95 Working Group in its efforts to complete the transition of the IETF’s standards and procedures process.  Over many years he has taken senior leadership roles in the IETF, IAB, Internet Research Task Force (IRTF), Internet Society, and Public Interest Registry (the .org registry).

Huizer also contributed significantly to the internationalization of the IETF by organizing the first IETF meeting outside of North America, in Amsterdam, in July 1993.  From December 1991 till April 1995 he was Area Director for the Applications area of the IETF and as such a member of the Internet Engineering Steering Group. From 1995-2002 he was a member of the IAB. From 1999 till 2002 he was chairman of the IRTF. He served on the ISOC Board of Trustees from 2002 till 2007.Erik Huizer, CTO of SURFnet and professor of Internet applications at Utrecht University, was inducted into the prestigious Internet Hall of Fame today. Huizer now holds the title of Global Connector.
