David Bryant Mumford is an American mathematician known for distinguished work in algebraic geometry, and then for research into vision and pattern theory. He won the Fields Medal and was a MacArthur Fellow. In 2010 he was awarded the National Medal of Science. He is currently a University Professor Emeritus in the Division of Applied Mathematics at Brown University. He was born on June 11, 1937 Worth village, West Sussex. David Mumford was President of the International Mathematical Union from 1995-1998, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1975) and was MacArthur Foundation Fellow from 1987 to 1992. He has received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including the IEEE Longuet-Higgins Prize (2005), the Shaw (2006) and the Wolf Prize (2008). In 2010 he received the National Medal of Science.
