Jack Steinberger is a physicist currently residing near Geneva, Switzerland. He co-discovered the muon neutrino, along with Leon Lederman and Melvin Schwartz, for which they were given the 1988 Nobel Prize in Physics. Jack Steinberger was born in Franconia, Germany on May 25, 1921. Steinberger immigrated to the United States in 1934. He studied physics at the University of Chicago, receiving his Ph.D. there in 1948. He was a professor of physics at Columbia University, New York City, from 1950 to 1971, and from 1968 he was a physicist at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switz. In 1988, he received the National Medal Of Science. He is the father of Ned Steinberger, founder of the eponymous company for headless guitars and basses.
