Jeet Thayil is a Kerala born Indian writer, musician and a librettist who currently resides in delhi. He is best known as a writer who has authored 4 collections of poems till now. They are titled - These Errors Are Correct (2008), English (2004), Apocalypso (1997) and Gemini (1992). He is the author of the libretto for the opera Babur in London, music composed by Edward Rushton. He is also known as a lyricist and guitarist. He has also edited a few books, the most notable ones being Bloodaxe Book of Contemporary Indian Poets (2008) and Divided Time: India and the End of Diaspora (2006).
He was born on October 13, 1959 in Kerala. He is the son of noted Malayali writer - T. J. S. George. Jeet spent his childhood and teens in different places of India apart from Hong Kong and New York, where his father worked as a journalist and editor. His first novel, Narcopolis was published in 2011. He has also worked as a journalist in New York, Mumbai and Bangalore. He was addicted to heavy drinking for almost two decades. However he overcame those obstructions of his writings and got a second chance. His first novel, Narcopolis, was also well praised by readers as well as critics. The book was shortlisted for the 2012 Man Booker Prize and the Hindu Literary Prize and it received the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature, the first Indian novel to win this prize. This novel is set mostly in Mumbai in the 1970s and 1980s. He was diagnosed with hepatitis C, and when he realized that time is a limited commodity he decided to write Narcopolis. For the same reason he dedicates this novel to hepatitis C. His academic years were also spent in Mumbai and this self-confessed embedded research work was rejected by every Indian publisher. This book later was shortlisted for 2012 Booker prize.
