Godavaris Mahavidyalaya has now become an adult by completing fifty years of its busy life. It has sustained itself and developed through the various upheavals on its way which are natural on the part of any institution . Maturity brings stability and then only development occurs. This matured institution had its beginning long back on 26th July 1963. Though the real beginning may be traced back to the year 1930, when Godavaris Vidyapitha was founded to pay respect to Pandit Godavaris, the great soul of the soil. The founding fathers of the institution had a great desire to impart education on the noble ideals of the ancient system . The motto of an educational institution is to enlighten the individuals and remove the encircling gloom of ignorance . The young generation must move from "Darkness to Light" and from "Untruth to Truth" through education. That is the objective of our institution too. It is situated in a semi urban area amidst unparallelled scenic beauty. Our institution is free from corrupting influences and evils of urban atmosphere. Words would fail to express our gratitude to the thousands of donors who are spread all over Orissa ranging from an ordinary agriculturist and a relatively not so important businessman to industrialists of far off Mayurbhanj.
The college first started functioning during 1963-64 as a science college (Pre University Science) with English, M.I.L, G.K., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In 1964 affiliation was granted in P.P.Sc. course ( with the same subjects as in P.U.Sc.) and Pre-University Arts course with Economics, Civics, Administration, Pol.Sc. and History as optional subjects.
In 1965 the 1st. year degree course was intrduced with History, Economics, Oriya, Political Science and Mathematics and in Pre-University Arts, Psychology was added. Finally in 1967-68 further affiliation was granted at the II and III B.A. pass stage, in all subjects and Logic and Sanskrit at 1st. year degree stage.
In 1971-72 affiliation was granted for starting B.Sc. degree classes in C.B.Z & P.C.M. Courses. In 1974-75 honours courses started in History and Psychology, and in 1975-76 Chemistry honours started. In 1976-77 the College got affiliation in Political science and Zoology honours, in 1977-78 Oriya honours was introduced. In the year 1981-82 the Commerce faculty in Intermediate and Physics honours in B. Sc started. Botany honours and Philosophy honours were opened in 1988-89. In 1991-92 honours in Math, Eng, Sans. and Eco were opened. An increase of 8 seats each in Chemistry, Physics, History, Pol.Sc. and Psychology honours were sanctioned from 1991-92. Industrial Fish and Fisheries (IFF) has been opened as a vocational subject with 30 seats in TDC science stream with subject combination C.BZ. & I.F.F. from the academic session 1996-97. The UGC has given permission to impart career oriented course (Add-on course) at Degree level in Television & Video Production, Tourism and Child Care .Thus the college has become a full fledged Arts and Science College. From the inception, the college has provided hostel accommodation for 50 Boys and hostel facility for 50 Girls has been provide since 2004.
The institution is committed to the cause of empowerment of rural youth through access to education, particularly higher education, enabling them to develop as intellectually alive, socially responsible citizens; ever ready for continuous personal and professional growth. To inculcate social, moral and spiritual values, further, it is committed to provide wide range of professional and vocational courses besides conventional ones for rural students to meet the changing needs.
