Government Arts College for Women, Pudukottai is an affiliated College of the Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu. It is a grant in aid college situated in Pudukottai catering to womens education, particularly the socially and economically backward students of the district. The college was established in 1969 with the sole aim of imparting higher education to the women of this backward district. The Motto of the college is Self Reliance and Service. The motto stimulates the students to grow with self support and humanity. In its forty three years of service, the college has achieved considerable success in accomplishing its mission. The college is recognized under 2f and 12B of the UGC act.
The foundation stone was laid on 01.07.1969 by the former Governor, His Highness Sardar Ujjal Singh. The necessary permission was given by the Government of Tamil Nadu, vide G.O.No. 987 dated 09.07.1969. The college was shifted to the present campus from the temporary building on 04.09.1972.The College has a vast campus of 21 acres and 69 cents. In the beginning, the building was sufficient for only for few strength. With the subsequent addition of new courses, gradually more buildings have been sanctioned and constructed out of the funds provided by the Tamil Nadu Government, UGC, members of the Parliament ,the state Legislative Assembly. A good share of the Namakku Namae Plan of the State Government also has contributed towards the growth of infrastructure.
The College was affiliated to University of madras till 1982. Then, this college came under the jurisdication of Bharathidasan University from 1982-1983 onwards. When the college started functioning, only pre University classes were introduced. Mathematics was the first UGprogram introduced in 1972 and following that, science subjects like Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Botany were introduced from 1974 to 2004. As for humanities, B.A. History was introduced in 1978. The Tamil Literature, Economics, English Literature and Tourism and Travel management were introduced from 1979 to 2003. Commerce was introduced in 1986 and B.B.A course was introduced in 2003.
