Government Law College, Ernakulam goes back to 1874 when legal Education set its roots in Kerala by the Maharaja of "ravancore sanctioning "the Organisation of a Law Class" in connection vith His Highness ColIege (i.e. Present University College), "rivandrum. This was with a view to enable the candidate from "ravancore to present themselves for the Law Examination of University of .1adras. Those law classes continued as such till 1894 when the nstitution was reorganiscd entirely on a different footing. The college vas raised to the status of an independent college under the designation of His Highness the Maharaja`s Law College, Trivandrum" with Mr. W.T.A. :osby Bar-at-law (Judge of the High Court of Travancore who was Ippointed as Professor or Law in 1892) as the first Principal. The faculty lad one Senior and two Junior Professors working an hour a week. A .eclurcr in Medical Jurisprudence working an hour/w~k was added to the acuIty in 1897. A complete set of rules was also formulated by the ]overnment for the control and regulation of work in the college. The ules prescribed the qualification required for the members of the teaching staff.
