Kokrajhar Govt. College (then Kokrajhar College) was established in 1959 at the heart of the town with a noble vision of bringing higher education to common people in general and the tribal people in particular. When Kokrajhar Govt. College was established, there were only three colleges in lower Assam: they were B.N. College at Dhubri, Abhayapuri College near Bongaigaon and Goalpara College at Goalpara. So Kokrajhar College played a vital role in imparting higher education to the socio-economically backward tribal people as well as other communities in the area. Like any other backward places of the country, people of this area had various social evils, superstitions, crude social practices, prejudices, etc. The economic system of this region was based on the pattern of landlord's dominance and exploitation. Tied to the old method of cultivation without any alternative means of livelihood, the poor people could not dream of many things not even the education of their children. Despite the availability of land, the poor could not rise for many factors. What looks obvious in hindsight for such socio-economic backwardness was owing to lack of good communication system, education and government incentive for enterprise and farmer-friendly economic policies. Only a small number of children of the landlords and moneyed people had access to education.
