People who have chosen to opt for online degrees offered by universities in India and have seen advertisements of the same may have a shock coming their way. The University Grants Commission (UGC) does not recognize courses that are only available online.

There are many such universities that offer courses that are solely online for distance learning purposes such as the Karnataka State Open University offers online and face-to-face programmes. The website also says, "In online courses, you get an opportunity to view videos, take assignments, etc. anytime anywhere and from any device." The website also says that courses can be taken completely online. When questioned by a national daily, the vice chancellor of KSOU, Prof MK Krishnan said that the course may not be valid for employment in India but is to keep up with international trends. 

Sikkim Manipal University also offers material online which the director, Prof NS Ramesh Murthy, says, is to supplement students who opt for distance learning and is not solely conducted online. At the same time a counsellor at a training institute that partners with SMU says that online courses that are solely online are offered by the university but the degree provided to the student does not mention that it is an online programme.

 "We have noticed these developments and have set up a committee to look into the matter. We will see if it's possible for us to work out a regulatory framework. However, at present, these degree courses are not valid and no university can offer such degree courses," says a senior DEB officer in response to the issues created because of the UGC not recognizing the online courses.
