City schools will celebrate Kala Utsav, an initiative of the ministry of human resource development (MHRD), to promote arts in education between September 21 and 27. The state education department issued a circular on Saturday asking government-aided, municipal and state-run schools to participate in the event.
In its second year, the programme is organised by Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan across India. Drama, dance, music, art and sculpture-making competitions at the block, district, state and national levels are held for students of Classes 9 to 12. The last date to register for the event is September 19.
The objective is to nurture students’ creativity by honing their skills in arts, music, dance and drama, among other fields. It is a platform for students and encourages schools to cultivate talent, said BB Chavan, deputy director of education, Mumbai region, adding that the MHRD minister will felicitate the winners.
September 19 is the last day for registration: Government-aided, state and civic-run schools can participate in the programme. Students from Classes 9 to 12 are eligible to participate in it. Each event requires the participation of a team of 6 to 10 students from a school.
Students winning the state-level competitions will receive cash prizes of Rs50,000, Rs75,000 and Rs1,25,000 depending on their rank.
