The Haryana government will set up colleges for girls within 20 kilometres of villages, towns and cities in the state, to ensure that women do not have to travel far for higher education, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Friday.

Speaking during the Question Hour of the ongoing Budget Session, the chief minister said that as part of the initiative, 17 new colleges for just women would be started from the coming academic session.

Haryana Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma also informed the House that government would be setting up an educational institute in the name of Captain Pawan Kumar, who died while fighting terrorists in Pampore last month.

The demand was raised by MLA Prem Lata, who said villagers there wanted an educational institute in the memory of the martyr and that they had promised to provide land free of cost. Irrigation Minister O P Dhankar said that as Capt Pawan Kumar was unmarried and that his family members do not want a job, an institute in his memory should be set up.

The government will also be setting up a university at Lakhnaur Sahib in Ambala district to be named after Guru Gobind Singh.
