Tamil Nadu Agricultural University is establishing Institute of Agriculture at Kumulur in the district. The institute will offer diploma programmes in agriculture from the current academic year.
Presently, diploma programmes are offered through various TNAU research stations in various parts of the State. The programmes are likely to be integrated and offered through the institute at Kumulur.
According to sources, the integration of colleges at one place is aimed at facilitating effective administration of the research farms. Eight lecture halls, office room, Principal’s chamber and toilet blocks have been built at Kumulur. An old building, to be used as staff quarters, is being repaired. An array of unused buildings belonging to the District Institute of Education and Training in the vicinity would be utilised for accommodating hostellers. As a large number of students will come from different parts of the State, we have made arrangements for accommodating them at the DIET buildings, the source said.
About 250 to 300 students are expected to be admitted to the two-year diploma programmes, admission for which is expected to begin by August, after the completion of the admission to the regular four-year Agriculture College courses.
Diploma programmes in agronomy, plant breeding, plant protection, entomology and soil sciences will be offered. A Principal has been appointed for the institute. The Kumulur campus will offer courses through English medium of instruction. Another institute to offer the courses in Tamil medium will come up at Vamban in Pudukottai district, sources said.
