The Centrally sponsored Jawaharlal Institute of post graduate Medical Education and Research – JIPMER will have its branch in Karaikal to offer medical education and hospital services.
JIPMER was established in Puducherry 52 years ago. The newly inducted Minister P R Siva, hailing from Tirunallar in Karaikal region, told PTI that the site had been identified and JIPMER would start admitting students from 2016-17 academic year, when hospital services would also commence.
Asserting that a super specialty hospital was the need of the hour in Karaikal, he said JIPMER had in principle agreed to take over the government hospital in Karaikal and provide super specialty services.
As much as Rs 50 lakh had been earmarked by public sector Puducherry Power Corporation Limited to enable the hospital in Karaikal purchase fully equipped ambulances, he said. Siva, who was inducted as the sixth minister in the Rangasamy led AINRC ministry on October 19, is awaiting allocation of portfolios.
He said he would soon get the portfolios and that he has been holding talks with officials of all departments to address the woes of Karaikal region.
