A team of students from IIM Kozhikode have lend their support to the underprivileged students of Government UP School, Karakulam by coming up with a centre for life skill education for them. The centre is launched in association with Anannia, an NGO based in Karakulam was inaugurated by district collector Biju Prabhakar in an event held at Karakulam Government UP School on Sunday.
"Students from class 1 to 7 should be given training in life skills, which will also help them identify their area of interest," said district collector Biju Prabhakar.The Centre For Life Skill Education is an extension of the pilot project 'Chilla', a home for the children of sex workers by Anannia which has received technical support from the team of IIM students.
The IIM students created an e-portal of academic study materials and designed the syllabus for the course. The project is undertaken by PG Business Administration students of IIM Kozhikode including Bina N, Mahashook Ebrahim, Dinesh KR, Aswathy Anna George, Rohan S and Nikhil Keshavan. The team also donated a computer system for the centre.
"It was their ideas for better education for the underprivileged students that led us to extend our help to Chilla," said Bina N, one of team members.
A hall is under construction at the Anannia campus in Karakulam, where the classes will be held from the next academic year starting June. A total of 15 students of the Government UP School, Karakulam, and 17 inmates of Chilla have been selected for the programme.
"The students from class 5 to 7 belonging to backward communities and from financially backward families were selected for the programme. To evaluate their skills, we will conduct a month-long summer school programme from April 18, with the help of which we will be able to identify the interests of the students," said Anil A, founder of Chilla.
The students will be trained in different areas including communication skills in English, computer skills, theatre, arts and crafts, dance, music, literature, cycling and swimming, personality development, healthy habits and first aid, brain memory and logical games.
