The Mahatma Gandhi University has decided to set up a major initiative in online education. According to Babu Sebastian, Vice Chancellor, the Syndicate meeting held on Thursday has decided to establish a Directorate of Online Education. The syndicate decision would now be placed before the Academic Council, scheduled to meet on May 23, to finalize the details.
The decision comes in the wake of uncertainty looming large over the future of its off-campus centers.
The Vice Chancellor said that the online education stream is expected to rake in revenue.
Despite opposition to the running of off-campus centers, the syndicate also decided in favor of these institutions. The decision was taken through a split vote in which two members, Sunny.K.George and Indu K S, wrote their dissent notes.
The university
had to close down 13 of its off-campus centers last year, including seven
outside the country and six outside the state, following a directive by the
University Grants Commission (UGC). The UGC issued the directive after it found
that these centers were operating outside the territorial jurisdiction of the
university.
