Sikkim plans to set up of National Organic Farming Research Institute (NOFRI) in Gangtok.
The agriculture ministry on Wednesday approved setting up of National Organic Farming Research Institute (NOFRI) in Gangtok, Sikkim, to extend research and technological support to organic farming systems in the country.
The institute will undertake basic, strategic and adaptive research on efficient, economically viable and environmentally sustainable organic farming systems for improving productivity and quality of produce," a ministry statement said.
Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh had announced the move to establish such an institute in Sikkim during the recently held 87th annual general meeting of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).
The institute will impart vocational and advanced training for promotion of organic farming in the country. "Required financial resources, manpower and infrastructure facilities will be made available accordingly," the ministry said.
Sikkim was selected for the institute as it is the only state in the country which has adopted organic farming on a universal basis.
