The state government informed the Madras high court, Tamil Nadu will have a brand new education law, governing all types of schools, within a year.

Special government pleader D Krishnakumar said a high-powered committee of experts would be constituted and it would come out with a draft report within six months.

Responding to this, the first bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Satyanarayana directed the government to form the committee within six months.

A copy of a notification issued by school education department secretary D Sabitha outlining a one-year time frame for the new law was also submitted in the court.

The notification said that after the constitution of the expert committee, the committee will submit its recommendations within six months and it should be place in public domain to get suggestions from general public. After considering the objections of the general public, if any, a comprehensive Act shall be finalised, and shall be placed on the floor of legislative assembly for approval. As these processes require one year to finalise the comprehensive Act, I seek one year time to issue the Act.

The matter relates to a PIL filed by one R Velu seeking to declare code of regulations for matriculation schools in Tamil Nadu as null and void in view of its inadequacies with regard to regulating school education in the state.
