The global ranking of prestigious Indian institutes have gone down with Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, along with six top-ranked Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), dropped in the latest QS World University Rankings 2016-17.

While Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has retained its position as the world’s best university for the fifth consecutive year, IISc Bangalore – best among all the Indian institutes – is at 152, down from 147 last year.Among all, only IIT Madras has entered into the global top 250 after a five-place rise.

The ranking of the rest institutes are — IIT Delhi was ranked at 185 place for 2016-17 while it was 179 last year, IIT Bombay at 219 (last year 202), IIT Kanpur 302 (271), IIT Kharagpur 313 (286), IIT Roorkee 399 (391) and IIT Guwahati in the 481-490 band, against 451-460 band last year.“The performance of Indian institutions in our recent regional rankings suggests that India is gaining some ground on its regional competitors.

Though India is making substantial and commendable progress towards ensuring that more of its tertiary-age population have access to tertiary education, the global edition indicates that substantial challenges remain,” said Ben Sowter, head of research at QS Intelligence Unit.About nine Indian universities lose ground on faculty/student ratio. This metric measures the ability of universities to maintain class sizes conducive to high-quality teaching.

In the area of research, only four Indian institutions feature in the list as compared to last year’s five. In this field, India’s best institute is IISc, ranked 11th.US institutions hold all the top three places with Standford and Harvad at number 2 and 3 respectively.
