With the thought of bringing UK and Indian scientists together in order to tackle major global challenges, Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) has planned to invest Rs 2.5 crore to deliver six Newton-Bhabha Fund workshops. Professor Dominic Tildesley, President of RSC (UK) has made this announcement while he spoke at Punjab University (PU). Leading universities from the UK including Cambridge, Nottingham and Cardiff and Indian universities -including IIT-Delhi, IIT-Madras and IIT-Mandi are involved in the project.
These workshops will be focused on varied chemical science topics such as human health, energy and environment and sustainability. Tildesley said “India is an increasingly influential centre of chemistry and a vital partner for UK science. We're committed to support the continued development of chemical sciences in India and fostering collaboration between two countries.” He added that RSC is re-signing a cooperation agreement with the (CRSI), at the 10th RSC-CRSI symposium, going to be held in Chandigarh this week.
Moreover, he said that the number of papers of Indian scholars published in RSC has increased significantly over the years. Professor Sourav Pal, president of the Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) said that the number of students that they were getting was never less, but they wanted good students to take up the subject so that good quality of research in chemistry He said this statement based on the trends of students taking up chemistry.
He added that women, as compared to men, take up chemistry at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, but retaining them has always been a problem. "This is a very special year, marking the tenth RSC-CRSI joint symposium and a decade of partnership. This has been one of the most successful and visible partnerships in the global context, promoting chemical sciences in India and bringing India and UK chemistry closer together than ever," added Pal.
