About Institution

Poompuhar College is situated on the northern bank of River Cauveri at Poompuhar- Melaiyur, 5 kilometers to the west of Bay of Bengal. Poompuhar was the capital of the Chola Kingdom. The classical Tamil Literature extols the glory of this ancient city, know for its culture and commercial connections with Greece and Rome.
In memory of the greatness of the place, the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Admn. Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu established this college in 1964, out of the funds of the religious institutions of Tamil Nadu by diversion of funds under section 36 of Tamil Nadu H.R & C.E Act.

The college was inaugurated in the year 1964 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Mysore Maharaja, His Highness Jayachamaraja Wadiyar. The Evening section was started in 1992. The Evening Section admits both men and women students in all the UG and PG courses. The college offers the following Under Graduate and Post Graduate courses in the Evening Section under semester pattern with Choice Based Credit system.
