Shillong Polytechnic was established in October, 1965 under the composite State of Assam. Initially the institute functioned from the Tribal Research Institute at Mawlai, Gaushala using its office rooms as classrooms and laboratories and a temporary shed for workshop practices. The only course offered at that time was civil engineering and the annual intake of students was 60. In 1968 due to a fire that destroyed the Tribal Research Institute, the Shillong Polytechnic was shifted to rented rooms and eventually to its present site. After the bifurcation of Assam in 1972 the institute came under the administrative control of the Government of Meghalaya. Its academic control, however remained under the State Council for Technical Education Assam till 1993 when the Meghalaya State Council for Technical Education (MSCTE) was formed.
In March 1992 Shillong Polytechnic proudly celebrated its Silver Jubilee. Shillong Polytechnic has now developed good infrastructure and facilities under the assistance of World Bank Assisted Tech. Ed III , a Project for up-gradation and strengthening of the Polytechnic Education in the country. The SHP is continuously striving to keep abreast of the latest technological developments with an aim for capacity expansion, quality enhancement and overall improvement of the efficiency of the institution.
