The history of musiceducation in India dates back to ancient period when all education wasimparted in Gurukulas and Ashrams of great Saints, Rishi, Munis. Thesystem of mordern institutionalization of education in graded, timebound structure was ushered in by the british rulers from themid-ninteenth century. Indian music education was brought andstructured in this system in the beginning of twentieth century.Two stalwarts of Indian music in this century, Pandit Vishnu DigambarPaluskar and Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande led and developed twostrong and parrallel traditions of this institutionalization of musiceducation and traning system. In 1926 Pt.Vishnu NarayanBhatkhande established a music school in Lucknow with the help andco-operation of Rai Umanath Bali and Rai Rajeshwar Bali and other musicpatrons and connoisseurs of Lucknow , culturally vibrant princely stateof Awadh. This institution was inaugrated at the hands of the thenGovernor of Awadh Sir William Marris and was named after him as "MarrisColloege of Music". On 26 th March 1966 , theState Goverment of Uttar Pradesh brought this college under its controland aptly renamed it after its founder as "Bhatkhande College ofHindustani Music."
